How's the fight for fiber going? Alt. providers for new houses?

Greetings, Posted early last fall here asking how the fight for fiber was going, and just wondering what the current status is with the CRTC? Just had the joy of calling Rogers about a $9.04 rate increase on my monthly internet bill, only 3-4 months after signing up, fought hard enough in the first place to get the rate I had which is terrible compared to what we paid with Rogers before moving into our new house. Also had to deal with Bell last week during a 4-day outage at work when Rogers cut Bell's entire trunk coming into our office building -- all I can say is Bell is better off not having a support team at all, it would likely cause customers less frustration. Can't get TekSavvy currently at home, as we only have Fiber from Rogers & Bell, no phone lines or cable lines. Does anyone know of alternative providers or ways of getting half-decent internet connectivity in Ajax, Ontario where the only connectivity presently coming in are Fiber? (Satellite, Mobile, paying for private fiber, ideas?) Thanks, Aaron

[Cable] ipv6 on rCable coming soon?

Hi just wondering if teksavvy has decided to let rogers assign their IPv6 address spaces to customers over cable yet? I know it's a loaded question but my question relates to information I read on CRTC site. http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2012/2012-96.htm As a paying customer for internet access, I feel I'm entitled to access IPv6 sites, because to me IPv6 is an important slice of a growing movement online. To me it seems teksavvy don't want to let rogers assign their address spaces, but I know this is pretty old information ( circ.2012 ). If I'm incorrect, of if anything newer can be said to explain teksavvy's IPv6 position over rCable, please share. I don't want to have to go to rogers, to get IPv6. I'm having problems with sites like netflix blocking public solutios like hurricane electric's 6in4 tunnelling blaming geolocation reasons (i know not your problem) but looking at that as a solution TS can offer to customers, so that the equipment and address assignments could be fully managed, at least it could be an option for customers that really want IPv6, and TS can guarantee that the IP Source is canadian. Thanks for the read thru.

Hi, I've just set up a pfsense router and I was able to configure everything except ipv6. For those of you having a pfsense router, how have you configure it? I've tried multiple things without success. Tried googling with no more luck. Thanks

I'm not up to date on the rules and regulations for the small ISPs versus the big telecoms, but does TekSavvy have access to Bell's Fibre network to provide internet service over it? If not, will that occur at some point in the not too distant future? My apartment building just got individual unit fibre installed and I'm sure that within the next week or two I'll likely get Bell's "special" introductory offer to subscribe, so am curious whether TekSavvy has access to it or will have access to it.

Teksavvy Smart RG 505n modems locked?

Hi, Moved to Kingston Ontario and found best reviews and prices for reseller of Bell dsl is Vmedia. (originally ordered cable based, but we found out during install of that it seems underground Cogeco cable is broken and it will take 8-12 weeks to put a new one in so only other option in this area is dsl and only lines here are Bell) Bought a used SmartRG 505n on kijiji that was previously with Teksavvy. Owner said she bought it outright. Shipped it to me 2 hours down the road, poor packaging and it bounced around a bit I'm sure. Hooked it up, configured it, solid green dsl light but I keep getting solid internet red light. After speaking with Vmedia techs, uploading new firmware from Vmedia website and reconfiguring again, issue not resolved. Vmedia reset password and still nothing but solid red. They told me issue was the modem is broken. No problem. Seller refunded me and I bought another used SmartRG 505n locally from a nice family. They'd also bought it from Teksavvy. Brought it home, uploaded new firmware from Vmedia, reconfigured to their settings and solid internet redlight on this one as well. When I go to the smarter IP address to config, originally with both modems, the Teksavvy logo was there and there name appeared in the file version. After uploading firmware, both now show the SmartRg logo and the files are both Clear view, so I assume they are not locked by Teksavvy. Anyone know if they can be locked by Teksavvy? I believe the modems are about 2 years old or newer. My understanding from reading forums before buying these was that dsl modems purchased by customers are not locked and can be reconfigured to new isp. In the meantime, Vmedia has a ticket in with Bell to see if there's an issue on their end. Any suggestions, thoughts? I feel there's nothing wrong with the modems. thanks for your input.

Happy Teksavvy's 20th Anniversary!

Can anyone share a list of possible System Log entries and their meanings? For instance I'm seeing stuff like, "Jul 20 hh:mm:ss daemon err syslog: CAH:Failed to find radio for 0/wl0/" every minute or so. WiFi is working fine. I have no idea what this error means or what I should do about it.

Here's link to latest 2.5.0.4 firmware including the Release notes. There is a quite long list of bug-fixes that I'm sure many will benefit from. FYI I'm running it on SRG for about a month without any issues. The usual disclaimer: Use at your own risk! This is not official Teksavvy release. Can you provide any information regarding timelines and specific locations where you will be installing (and already have installed) FFTX? When are the centres outside of Chatham on the list? Yours, visibly drooling at the thought... L.

[DSL] Lord i hate dealing with Bell techs

As a backup we decided to get dsl 6/800 in-case there a major equipment outage as their was with rogers last week. Teksavvy had no issues setting this up but now we got bell telling techsavvy the line can only do half of that profile. This is as they completely and totally ignores the fact that for over a year we had dsl high-speed 50 which was rock solid and fully speed..we only changed over to cable five months ago for the needed bandwidth which sadly wasn't available on dsl. This is as ridiculous as the time bell told me i couldn't get my old speed on the dsl since i moved too far away. I had moved 10 feet to the second floor apartment in the same building lol.

[DSL] Custom DNS under Bridged VDSL Modem

$

My SmartRG modem is in bridged mode, so my router is doing the PPPOE login. I just learned that my old way to use custom DNS is change it WAN DNS Setting will not work. I cannot connect and login into my PPPOE when a custom DNS is set in place. On Cable modem since there is no login required, that is where I switch my DNS. Where else I can change DNS? I don't want to change it on each devices + guests as well.

[DSL] How much to move modem?

I have my modem upstairs connected to that small DSL outlet, looks like https://ibb.co/jcKBCJ. I connected my modem to the downstairs DSL outlet (same as the image) and the internet light just blinks, a sign its not working, so is there a fee to change the connection to the downstairs box? I had previously tested the downstairs DSL outlet when I had a Bell phone line, now that I don't have a home phone anymore, I figured since I had the dryloop it should work?

Technical advice for potential Quebec customer....

We have just cancelled our Cogeco service (long story....LOL). We decided to go with Bell for both our telephone and internet service. The difference in the speeds was/is unacceptable for us. Cogeco was a cable connection, and Bell is DSL. Our download speeds dropped from a consistent 7-8Mbps, to a fragile 2.5Mbps(do not laugh, unless you have a solution for us.....LOL). We have contacted Teksavvy, and they will/should be able to give us service, with another 15Mbps plan (be nice to have our 7-8Mbps back.....LOL). Our question for you people in the know; which modem should we purchase? We would rather own than rent. We do not require WiFi, and would like to be prepared, at least to see the proposed 50Mbps that the CRTC promises for all Canadians.....LOL. So, the modem will also need to be of good quality that will last ten years too, waiting on this 50Mbps.....LOL. We have checked a couple that were suggested by TS, but they did not have really good reviews, Hitron and Thompson (Puma6, IIRC....LOL). By the way, our location is beside Mont Tremblant (Lac Superieur, Qc) in the Laurentian mountains......J&J.

[DSL] SmartRG 516ac in bridged mode troubleshooting

Hi there, I am switching from a cable package to a dsl package and I just got my 516ac modem hooked up and working. But I have a Ubiquity USG I have been using as my router that I want to keep using. So I was hoping all I had to do was change the modem to bridged mode and change my wan connection on my usg to pppoe and enter the log in credentials and I would be good. But I can't seem to get any internet connection behind my USG. Also, with the modem in bridged mode, should I be going to my router via the Wan port? Or one of the Lan ports? I tried both with neither working. Is there anything that stands out that I should be changing?

[DSL] SmartRG 515AC has pathetic WiFi on 2.4 GHZ *^$#@!

I finally convinced my daughter to switch to Teksavvy from Bell and it happened this past Monday. She was sent a SmartRG 515 AC and uses its wireless only on the 2.4 GHZ band since there are no 5 GHZ devices in the home. The modem is in a second floor room, in the identical location to where the Bell Home Hub 1000 was located and all speed tests were done with the laptop in the same location on the main floor. The lateral distance is about 25 feet. With the Home Hub 1000 she had her full 15/10 wireless. Always. With the SmartRG 515 RG if she gets half that she is doing well. With laptop outside the room where the modem is located but on ground level, i.e. with a window and a low wall between the laptop and the modem, the wireless speed was basically as pathetic as inside the house. Several phone calls with customer service and tinkering with channels and finally doing a factory reset have achieved absolutely nothing. Tellingly last night the CS we spoke with said that she advises people who order through her that "the wireless is not the best" and suggests they buy their own router and use its WiFi. The 515 is touted as a wireless modem but its performance is totally inadequate to be as polite as I can be. Is there anything that can be done so that the WiFi on the SmartRG actually works? Other than going back to Bell and the Home Hub......
