Hello,
On February 1, 2019, there will be some major changes to DNS with regards to EDNS:
A number of DNS software and service providers have announced that we will all cease implementing DNS resolver workarounds to accommodate DNS authoritative systems that don’t follow the EDNS protocol. Each vendor has pledged to roll out this change in some version of their software by the ‘Flag Day.’
[…]
Domains served by DNS servers that are not compliant with the standard will not function reliably after February 1, 2019, and may become unavailable.
If your company’s DNS zones are served by non-compliant servers, your online presence will slowly degrade or disappear as ISPs and other organizations update their resolvers. When you update your own internal DNS resolvers to versions that don’t implement workarounds, some sites and email servers may become unreachable. https://www.isc.org/blogs/dns-flag-day/
It turns out that teksavvy.com is effected by this:
This domain will face issues after the 2019 DNS flag day. It will work in practice, BUT clients will experience delays when accessing this domain. We recommend you request a fix from your domain administrator! You can refer them to https://dnsflagday.net/ and technical report https://ednscomp.isc.org/ednscomp/8489f654d5
Who is the person that should be looking at this?

[Cable] Teksavvy: rcable continually disconnects or long periods of outage
Ever since I moved to my new house in Mississauga last August I have experienced disconnects from my Teksavvy cable usually every 5-60 minutes, no apparent pattern. Some days the outages last for a few minutes before the internet reconnects, some days like today have had no internet for more than 10 hours.
I have called Teksavvy and they have grudgingly sent out Rogers techs who do a quick 2 second signal check, replace a coax connector and promptly leave saying everything is perfect. Obviously it is not.
I switched from a 50mb to a 150 mb connection in October, hoping it would fix the issue, but it didn't same symptoms and issues. Current modem is a Hitron CDA3 (purchased myself) and the Rogers tech said maybe the modem wasn't a good quality and should find something else.
Has anyone else had similar issues. At this point I will likely need to move to a Bell 50mb DSL line and get rid of my Teksavvy service as they only can provide a 25mb DSL line in my area.
Thanks

[DSL] New Smart TV connection issues
Hello! I am a bit lost on what step to take next to resolve my issue. We just got a new 4K Samsung Smart TV and it is only connected on Wi-Fi. It seems to have streaming buffering issues so I upgraded our internet from Teksavvy, and while improved, is still not working quite well. Here are some facts:
- Currently have Teksavvy DSL 50/10
- Modem: Sagemcom F@ST 2864
- Modem is hard connected to my PC, and the TV is connected via Wi-Fi about 25 feet through 2 apartment walls from the modem.
- I have never updated my modem, someone suggested updating firmware but I'm not sure how.
Is my modem too old? What kind of modem should I be looking for if it needs to be replaced?
Thank you in advance for any guidance.

[Email] smtp.teksavvy.com - from inside the Teksavvy Network
Hello,
Is anyone else having issue with SMTP relay - unauthenticated - while using their Teksavvy connection via smtp.teksavvy.com on port 25?
It used to resolve to ironport-out.teksavvy.com however, it seems to be it's own device now and is not configured with the 206.248 subnet properly to allow relay.
Thank you,
Zacron

HT812 doesn't register
My ATA HT812 (bought from Teksavvy) is behind a HITRON router+modem from Rogers.
Now Rogers is doing some work in this area of Mississauga and the internet connection is lost time to time. When the internet connection is being re-established , every PC in the house works correctly except ATA which doesn't register.
If I restart ten modem-router (HITRON) and after that the ATA, everything is OK.
Any settings I can change in HITRON and/or ATA to facilitate registering automatically when the internet is re-established????
Thank you,

[DSL] Confused About Pros/Cons of Bridge Mode
Hello, earlier today I received an Asus RT-AC86U that I had bought a few days back. I still have yet to hook it up as I am reading the manual on it. I was just wondering what are the pros/cons of having the modem (SR516AC) in bridge mode as opposed to routed mode? Does one get a faster wifi speed, that is closer to wired speed, or is there no difference in wifi speed?
I know that other factors (interference from other electronics, etc.) all come into play when it comes to wifi speeds
I am currently using the wifi on the SR516AC, but up until about a week ago I was using a Dlink DIR868L router. Only reason why I am not currently using it is I tried to upload DDWRT firmware to it, and I think I had bricked it because
My setup then was:
SR516AC - Routed mode, but with the wifi disabled
Tektalk ATA (Grandstream HT502) - DHCP mode (hooked to the back of the SR516AC)
Dlink DIR868L - DHCP mode (hooked to the back of the SR516AC as well)
I've never had any connection issues with the setup like that. But was just curious as to the advantages/disadvantages to having the router (in this case the Asus RT-AC86U) doing the PPPoE.
Thank you ,
Tom Martin

I have another question, plz. :-?
So, I configured my TP-Link wireless router with these settings this time:
- Under DHCP, I set the DNS to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4. This automatically sets the Google public DNS to devices connect to my router; instead of manually configuring the DNS.
- Disabled IPV6 for Wan, and the LAN is set to SLAC; link-local address I believe.
I noticed that the speed is great, especially on Apple TV, iPad... but most importantly, the battery life is great..., I mean, before it used to drain the battery on iPad and iPhone; with TekSavvy's default DNS, and IPV6 not disabled.
How come this change? Is it safe to set Google's public DNS directly into DHCP section of the router? I have two sections;
- WAN DHCP (set to dynamic, and it picks TekSavvy's DNS addresses)
- DHCP Clients Settings: Here, I have set DNS 1 and DNS 2 to Google's public DNS.
Let me know if my config seems to be lright. Thanks. :uhh:

SmartRG 505N won't sync following firmware upgrade
Yesterday morning, I upgraded my SmartRG 505N from firmware version 2.5.0.1, through v2.5.0.14 to the latest version provided by Teksavvy (namely, 2.6.1.9).
I followed the instructions from Teksavvy here: https://help.teksavvy.com/hc/en-us/articles/200673910-SmartRG-505N-Firmware-Upgrade
Prior to the upgrade, I was able to get a DSL sync (DSL link solid green on my SmartRG unit) but following the upgrade, the modem is no longer able to sync.
The logs show the following 3 lines every few minutes:
Jan 1 01:23:19 kern crit kernel: Line 0: xDSL G.994 training
Jan 1 01:23:24 kern crit kernel: Line 0: VDSL G.993 started
Jan 1 01:23:31 kern crit kernel: Line 0: xDSL link down
Steps I have tried to troubleshoot the issue:
1) Upload the latest config from Teksavvy (I was originally using the modem in bridge mode but have since also tried routed mode).
2) In between each test, I powered down the modem for a few minutes before powering it up again
3) Attempted to sync using various telephone cords
4) Manually configured both bridge and routed mode (once again following Teksavvy's instructions)
5) Called Teksavvy support and, through them, spoke with Bell to see if they could resolve the issue.
Next step will occur sometime this afternoon when a Bell technician comes onsite. However, I do not have confidence that the tech will be able to solve the problem and rather will blame the modem for the issue.
I've searched for similar issues in the forums and came across the following post:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29718150-SmartRG-SR505N-ADSL-Routed-No-Signal-Setup-Issues
I don't think I have the exact same issue but it at least points to the possibly of the problem being caused by the configuration of my 505N.
Has anyone ever experienced a similar problem?
Any advice would be appreciated.

New vCable speed tiers?
It looks like Videotron has updated their speed tiers (http://www.videotron.com/residential/internet/residential-internet). Current tiers (free modem rental with all tiers, these are all the non-discount permanent rates, 12-month discount rates are cheaper):
- 15/10 with 50GB for $53/mth
- 60/10 with unlimited for $79/mth
- 400/50 with unlimited for $85/mth
- 940/50 with unlimited for $105/mth
Compare this with TekSavvy's current offering, which does not include the modem:
- 5/1 with 200GB for $28/mth
- 10/1.5 with 200GB for $34/mth
- 15/10 with 200GB for $39/mth
- 20/10 with 200GB for $42/mth
- 30/10 with 200GB for $48/mth
- 60/10 with unlimited for $64/mth
- 120/20 with unlimited for $73/mth
- 200/30 with unlimited for $95/mth
- 940/50 with unlimited for $140/mth
So this prompts three questions:
1) Why are there so many TekSavvy tiers? It's a ridiculously complicated service offering with often barely any price difference between tiers
2) TekSavvy's offering is not competitive for the 200 and 940 tiers (maybe even the 120 tier considering the modem is extra), are there any plans to update the pricing to reflect this?
3) Are existing 200/30 users going to see a free upgrade to the 400/50 tier? We already seem to be paying $10 more than Videotron's 400/50 tier.

[DSL] SR505N / SR515AC firmware upgrade
I have noticed that new firmwares are available for both modems and the last two steps are now to perform a factory reset. Are these new steps just added or I just never paid attention before?
I have just performed an upgrade from 2.6.1.6 to 2.6.1.10 without a reset and everything seems to be working fine. Is there an incompatibility between these two firmwares?

Potential security issues with SR515ac
Hi all,
I recently noticed two issues with this device, (1) although I've disabled WAN access, using a port scanner shows that all of the corresponding ports are still open on my public IP address. I don't seem to able to log in, but I think it should not be available at all anymore and the fact that it's still responding to requests seems to be a potential vulnerability and concerns me.
(2) this device has a TR-069 Client built-in that according to the description is supposedly used to "Auto-Configuration Server (ACS) to perform auto-configuration, provision, collection, and diagnostics to this device." this "feature" was enabled by default but after disabling it I notice that according to my pi-hole instance the router is still connecting to SmartRG servers multiple times a day.
Both of these two are making me pretty uncomfortable with having this device as the gateway to the internet at our place and I thought I bring it up here and see what everyone else thinks about my concerns.
Firmware 2.6.1.9
Cheers,

[DSL] SmartRG 505N Firmware Version 2.6.1.9
Just wanted to share my experience with this firmware as I have run into some strange speed results after flashing. I was coming from version 2.6.1.6 and had no issues with ping or connection attainability. After upgrading to 2.6.1.9 I noticed that my ping overall went from 6 to 10-14 and attainable speed through a speedtest was off by about 5Mbps on my 50Mbps connection. This was persistent after factory a reset, power cycling and sometimes attainable speed would be 20Mbps slower, even though the attainable speed on the B0 Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps) was always showing the normal value of 53948 for my line sync rate. I flashed back to 2.6.1.6 and did a factory reset again, inputting all the PTM values and everything was back to normal with full speed. This was with the SmartRG 505N in a bridged configuration with my ASUS RT-AC3100.
