I just checked again after a few months and I'm able to sign up for service in a FTTH-only area. So Rogers obviously is able to separate services for FTTH now, what's the excuse for hold up for TPIA access other than regulatory?

[Cable] STAC.02.16 DCM475 on Videotron?
Im moving to Gatineau and will switch to Videotron cable via Tek (currently on Rogers in Otown). A friend has offered me his old Thomson DCM475 modem for free, but with the Ontario FW (STAC.02.16). Can this be used on Videotron?
Reading on the forums, Videotron will push FW updates, but I am not sure if it has to be on STAC.05.xx FW first or if they will upgrade an Ontario 475 as well.

[DSL] strange dsl issue
I have 25/10 vDSL at downtown Toronto. recently it seems slow down a bit so I ran speedtest, and the download speed stay at 20mbps or less constantly (no matter
what time I did the test). upload is around 10mbps which is fine. during those speedtest, it hit the 24 or 25 at the first couple seconds then drop back to 20 or below. I changed cables, power cycle modem many times, also upgraded the SR505N firmware to latest (the one posted on teksavvy's support page). the download
still at 20 mbps or below. I have opened a ticket in direct forum and couple teksavvy technicians checked my line status and it seems all ok.
(all tests were done via direct wired connection from pc to SR505N, no router in between, no wifi either)

During negotiations, Halabi recommends that people lay out alternatives they are considering such as a cheap streaming service like Netflix, a low-cost internet-based home phone such as Ooma, and internet with a smaller, competitive provider such as Teksavvy.

[DSL] Packet loss woes
I have been experiencing regular packet loss for the past week and a half. Here is a typical example of stats I get from pingtest.net:
http://www.pingtest.net/result/143311375.png
I am on teksavvy's 15/1 ADSL plan.
Before the packet loss issues I was having intermittent disconnects (throughout March). A Bell service rep came and recommend that I buy a new modem. He also upgraded my speeds because I was getting less than 15/1. That seemed to get me back online permanently, but now I have severe packet loss. The modem is a TP-Link 8816 ADSL2+. I used the exact same model before these issues and it worked perfectly for several months.
Anyway, I put in another ticket, and had another Bell Rep come two days ago to try and fix the packet loss issue. He changed some cables outside, replaced my jack inside and said that the line seemed a lot cleaner. It has done nothing. A teksavvy rep called me shortly after his visit and TOLD me that my issue was resolved. I said it wasn't resolved and she told me that the problem was on my end and that she can't help me any more.
I'm not the most adept when it comes to network issues. I am going to test the router at another location tonight. What other diagnostics information should I include here?
Please advise, thanks.

[DSL] Strange Skype Issues
My Skype call quality has gotten more and more degraded (sometimes intolerable) over the last two months at my home wifi - it works surprisingly a lot better with my data connection AP'ed from the phone with the same device (my ipad/pc) - so it leads me to believe it is not the software. I tried it from the wired connection in the pc, it stays stable for a little longer but eventually ends up the same. I am using the 15/1 DSL line with a TP-link modem (TD-W8961ND). Here are the steps I have tried so far
- Tried other apps - Hangouts and Facetime, they work (near) FLAWLESSLY
- Shut down all internet consuming services from other devices, even my NO-IP DDNS reporter and steam from PC - no effects
- Set the least interfering channel manually and set broadcast power to high. This resulted in a significant SNR increase and yet, skype stayed the same
- Ran speedtest to verify my wireless speed ranges from 13 -14 mbps d/l and 0.6-0.7 u/l which should more than suffice for Skype HQ calls (400 kbps). But the call quality is below LQ and even the voice breaks up.
- Ran local streaming services to check if there is any unknown signal drop (via plex), they work fine even with HD
- Rebooted the modem and deleted the network in my Ipad and then reinstalled Skype - nothing
Could this be a strange routing issue?
p.s: not that I HAVE to have Skype, my parents are too tech retards to use anything else

Anyone noticing anything inconsistent/laggy today?
Noticed today my connection didn't seem as "crisp" as normal on my typically rock-solid 25/5 connection. Did a speedtest here on dsl reports and the speed is a little inconsistent, anywhere from 9-25 and latency is 2-3x worse than normal. IE: SEattle typically shows around a 35-40 latency and is 100+ today. A fellow on a forum I go to who has Telus as an IP said he's noticed it bad today as well. Is there something going on somewhere?
Looks like some flaky results on tracert with IPs back east.

[DSL] I no longer qualify for 50/10 why though?
Hi everyone!
I've signed up for TSI's 25/10 because 50/10 isn't available here anymore.
Not a problem really.
But I got curious, why can I no longer sign up for 50/10? Bell's website showed 50 before, 25 is max now.
Its weird considering I had 50/10 from Bell without pairbonding, etc
Attainable rates:
2009 - 66,000Kbps
2010 - 63,000Kbps
2011 - 62,000Kbps
2012 - 60,000Kbps
2013 - 59,000Kbps
2014 - 58,000Kbps
2015 - 56,000Kbps
end of 2015 - 53,000Kbps
2016 - ? (Can't check yet)
What is the reason? Line degradation? Ports aren't available? Stinger doesn't have enough capacity for more speed?
What is the Attainable rate necessary for 50Mbps function?

[Cable] Cable 60/10 availability
I have a DCM476 and I'm on an older 28/1 300GB $55/mo plan. It's pretty much strictly inferior to the 30/5 400GB plan for $57, so I was initially planning on switching to that because of the last price rise.
I've heard though that the 60/10 plan is still available even though it's not listed on the site. Can anyone here confirm this? Anyone know what the pricing would be? I think that my DCM476 should work with the 60/10 plan, so that would mean that I could avoid another modem upgrade so soon.
The other option for me would be National Capital Freenet's 50/10 300GB + dryloop plan for $59.05, but that would be another new modem and set up fee which I'd like to avoid. If the price for 60/10 is fairly close to the NCF's rate for 50/10 then I'd like to stick with Teksavvy.
Thanks for any help!

Very slow download speed from File Hosts
Starting a few days ago, I have been getting very slow download speeds, under 50KBytes/sec, from File Hosts like Uptobox, Openload, Mega, etc. I have tried multiple download managers and browsers. The speeds are the same at any time day or night. I'm in downtown Toronto.
I used to get over 500KBytes/sec from these File Hosts. I have asked several friends on different ISP's, and they are still getting fast speeds from these File Hosts.
I still get 6Mbits/sec on all speed tests, and torrents still download at full speed (although they seem to take much longer now to reach full speed, even with hundreds of seeders).
What could be causing the slow speeds from these File Hosts?
