[DSL] DSL Evening Slowdown?

$

0
I have DSL (TekSavvy through Telus) in the west Vancouver area. I am paying for Unlimited 15Mbps download, but from about 5 to 11 pm weeknights, my internet seems to slow to between 2.5 and 5.5 Mbps. I understand slowdowns during peak hour congestion, but this is an unacceptable amount of slowdown. After contacting TekSavvy support they are asking me to consent to a possible $99 charge to get Telus to perform a diagnostic. Can anyone else comment on whether or not this problem is likely to be with Telus, or am I going to lose $99 dollars for them to just say "Peak Hours lol" Thanks

[Cable] New Rogers Rates & Better deals available from others

I am currently on the 25/2 internet service for 41.95 and did some price comparison and here is what I found: TSI 30/5 300gb $54.95 TSI: 60/10 with 300gb $69.95 Start 60/10 with 300gb $65 Vmedia 60/10 unlimited $64.95 Rogers 60/10 with 320gb $54.95 (via a loyalty offer). Price goes up to $59.95 after 1 year. This price includes the 24/8 Hiteon modem rental. Electronic Box 30/5 for 1000gb limit ($29.95 for 6 months, then $52.95 Seems like TSI wants to make more $$ and their price is not as good as the others. I rarely go over 200 GB so the 300GB is just fine. Much as I hate Rogers, their deal seems pretty good to me right now. As for price stability, seeing that TSI raised the rate of a grandfathered account by $5 shows that nothing is actually grandfathered: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29283959-Cable-Price-increase-on-grandfathered-plan-w-no-speed-increase-28-1-67 I do get a few bucks off per month via loyalty, but they will also be moving if the rates start getting high. What would you guys suggest I do?

[TekTalk] What is with all the telemarketers?

Hey everyone. First off, the family is more than pleased with TekTalk. The quality and price are fine, and so are the many features (well, the ones I've managed to figure out, that is. How would I get speed dial to work?). My major peeve, however, is the crazy increase in telemarketing calls. It's either calls about fucking air duct cleaning, or pre-recorded notices about credit cards we don't have or some such nonsense. I honestly can't remember if we got these kinds of telemarketing calls with Rogers-—or, if we did, certainly not this frequently. I make sure to block the numbers through the Tek Talk portal, but I don't know how useful that is. Even as I'm writing this, I paused to answer a call about air duct cleaning. Is there a way to properly screen and block these calls? Or is there some other service you guys provide that we can sign-up for to combat this? Not sure how everyone else in the family feels, but I'm pretty done with this stuff and would like it to stop. Other than that, though, Tek Talk has been a great, cost-effective service in comparison to Rogers, our previous jailers. Hope to hear from some helpful voices soon. :)

[DSL] Is this Standard Operating Procedure by Bell tech??

Last night we had a Bell tech come by our place as we migrated to dryloop. After disconnecting the home's wiring he connected his tone emitter to the line jack of the pots splitter and ran off to the box to fiddle with the wires. Anyhow, when the switch was finally done, doesn't he muck up the pots splitter?! He filled all 3 RJ11 jacks of the splitter with clear silicone. http://comtestnetworks.com/data/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/CPE-01-4.jpg Do they normally do this? Does anyone know if this is a new procedure? What a pain this is. Especially as our demarc is the old school ones like below that doesnt have a phone jack to be abel to conduct any type of testing http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/27/Demarc2.JPG

ZTC - DSL 15mbps to 6mbps speed change.

Before ZTC kicks in, I'm getting a stable 15mbps connection but once ZTC kicks in during 8pm-12mn, I'm only getting 5-5.5mbps, nowhere near 6, and not to mention the speed is kinda spiky if I do a SpeedTest(that graph that they generate when you do a speed test). Is this normal or is this something I should not be getting?

Cogeco Cable in Quebec

Good day everybody. I'm currently a teksavvy customer on vCable, I've been with them for 2 years now. However, I am movin this month and the area that I am moving to is a Cogeco territory. I looked on the website and put in my new postal code and it shows that cable is available at my new address. So I called up customer service to see about moving my service over and I was informed that they were unable to set up a cable connection at that address. My question: Why is this, and will it be possible to have Teksavvy through cogeco at any time in the future? Thanks

[Cable] ** New speeds and changes to cCable or Cable over Cogeco lines**

Hello all, Bellow is the lineup of new speeds and tiers. There aren't many changes but I'm excited about these packages and rates. For the last few years, Cogeco rates have always been out of speck, cost wise to us. We have struggled to offer a decent lineup and effectively did what we could to help customers out since many simply had no other alternatives. It was the only way to get decent internet speeds for many. Alternatives like DSL couldn't, and still cant, reach higher speeds in many areas. Where I live, here in Chatham, it's like that. There are few alternatives. With the latest CRTC tariff notice from Cogeco though, which is what triggered these changes, we now have a fairly good line up of speeds but the most exciting part is that there is a mention that CBB rates will come down. That's why I'm excited. We finally have long term sustainability with costs that are more reasonable and that allow us to offer reasonable services at reasonable rates. There's a catch though. It's a fairly significant one, but that will hopefully sort itself out in short order. The catch is that we don't yet know what the CBB rate will be! A new tariff notice, a second one, is said to be imminent, but we don't yet have it in our hands and we don't know what the CBB rate will be. We are in a bit of a quagmire is the truth of it. This first notice says we need to migrate to new speeds and these new speeds go in effect before we know the new CBB rates! We don't want to put prices out there that would be changed within a month or two. More importantly though, we want to continue to make sure you guys have decent options. The simple truth is that if the CBB rates don't/didn't change and come down significantly, we could no longer sustain these offerings. Usage has gone up significantly in the last year and right now, if we had to price things according to the CBB rate as it has existed for the past year+, we would be forced to raise rates significantly. The cool part, is that we probably don't need to worry about any of that since the CBB rate is changing. *smile* These new rates below are based on best guess/estimates of what we believe the CBB rate will come in at once the new tariff, the second one, is submitted at the CRTC. We expect that it will be submitted soon based on the fact that they mentioned it in their first tariff notice. The long and the short of it is that this is exciting news assuming everything goes according to plan. Without further delay! *drum roll* ...here are the new speeds and tiers: ******************* 10/2 mbps (new speed – existing 10/1.5 users are grandfathered) 75 Gigs - $34.95 300 Gigs - $45.95 (Optional in MyAccount portal: ZTC – 6) Unlimited - $59.95 20/10 mbps (new speed – existing 20/2 users are grandfathered) 150 Gigs - $42.95 300 Gigs - $52.95 (Optional in MyAccount portal: ZTC – 9) Unlimited - $79.95 55/10 mbps (new speed – existing 30/2 users will be migrated to 55/10 automatically) 150 Gigs - $67.95 300 Gigs - $74.95 (Optional in MyAccount portal: ZTC – 15) Unlimited - $99.95 ******************* All existing users are grandfathered unless otherwise stated. Zap The Cap is available on all 300GB tiers. Install fee changed to $65 (straight pass-through) enjoy! -- Marc - CEO/TekSavvy -- Marc - CEO/TekSavvy

[DSL] [IPv6] Does Tomato/MLPPP/IPv6 work with DHCP-PD?

$

I want to get IPv6 working on my network again, and managed to get IPv6 enabled on my static IP login (@wiredhighspeed.com). Teksavvy told me I needed to use DHCP-PD. Does the old Tekmato support that? I'm running version 1.27-mp3alpha7, is that the latest? Right now, using manual configuration, it doesn't work. I don't see any IPv6 packets coming back over the PPP link. I sniffed the PPP session configuration, and I do see IPv6-related PPP packets. The PPP IPv6 Control Protocol is used to enable IPv6 on the existing PPP session. When I ping an IPv6 address on the Internet, I can then see my packets go over ppp, but nothing ever comes back. I guess my router needs to do DHCP-PD before Teksavvy's hardware decides to route my prefix?

Cable Internet In An Apartment That Never Had Cable?

Hey, I'm currently on TekSavvy Cable and have been happy enough with the service that I will like to keep it. I have been making plans to move in with my girlfriend in a few months, but her apartment is part of a reconverted house, and her section has been built quite recently. Therefore, there never was a connector in her apartment, and I'm not sure if it's been run to any of the other apartment of the house. She's currently on Bell but hates it. Assuming the service is available at the house to begin with, can I still get cable internet in that apartment? Is that included in the $50 installation fee or is that something separate? Worst case scenario I can switch to DSL, although it would be nice for the overlap in case issues arise.

[DSL] Using single 4-wire cable for both VDSL and Phone

Guys, I am sure I am not the first to ask this, but couldn't find suitable info. I am going to get 25/10 VDSL installed. I want to put my modem in upstairs bedroom and don't want to run the separate wire all the way from the basement. Also I want to use phone in that room. The existing phone cable from the basement to the room I need is 4-wire (red+green and yellow+black). I want to use all 4 wires on it, two for VDSL modem and 2 for phone. Is this setup OK to do? I never saw it mentioned...

[DSL] What is the dsl speed you have in the west Mississauga?

I live in the area near Thomas and Erin Mills Parkway. I ordered the 15/10 because the qualification tool says I am qualified up to 25/10. After a week of ongoing phone calls with teksavvy, I am right now on 7/1 and teksavvy said this is the most stable speed I would get for my address. Please share your dsl speed if you live in this area. I am like 5 mins walk to middlebury public school. Thanks.

[DSL] DSL Congestion Earlier This Evening?

Earlier tonight I noticed that my connection was performing poorly. I was getting over 400ms ping times to Google from my router with high variance. I was also getting poor results when pinging the other end of the pppoe tunnel. I rebooted the modem (it had been a while) and restarted the pppoe session, which improved things but I still had this kind of a connection to google: --- google.ca ping statistics --- 2158 packets transmitted, 2117 packets received, 1.9% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 8.023/37.378/334.463/40.938 ms I went away and watched a movie and came back to this: --- google.ca ping statistics --- 10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0.0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 7.420/7.578/7.782/0.099 ms I realize it's several orders of magnitude fewer packets in the sample, but that's what my connection usually looks like. Was there congestion on some of the links bringing the l2tp traffic in from Bell?

TekSavvy in Quebec: DSL vs. Cable?

$

As a Quebecer, I'm feeling jealous about the nice new TekSavvy plans being rolled out in the Ontario area. Are there speed/pricing changes coming soon for Quebec? And if not ... does anyone have an opinion on TekSavvy's DSL vs. cable? Right now I have Cable 30/unlimited for $84.95, but I want more speed. Can anyone comment on the quality of DSL 50/unlimited for $89.99? At a glance that's almost double the speed for only $5 more, but I don't know if DSL delivers on its speed promises. (I always get max speed on my cable 30, even at peak times.)
