[Cable] WRT54GL & Teksavvy 34/3 Service

I'm currently running the Linksys WRT54GL with the Teksavvy 34/3 service, and I'm wondering if the old router may be bogging down my connections. Recently I've been experiencing some slowdowns all over my network. I have about 6-10 devices connected at all times, sometimes more depending on the mobile devices being used. File transfers between computers will increase latency by a few hundred. Sometimes, my connections will drop, etc. I've tested just the router installed, and it doesn't seem to cause issues, so I just wanted to verify if the router is pretty much bottlenecking my network. (PS. I'm running DDWRT on the router. I've tested on Tomato, and stock firmware, and the issues still occur).

[TekTalk] TekTalk: No incoming audio on received calls

Until recently everything been fine but for the past week or so we've been loosing incoming audio call on calls we receive. Outgoing calls are 100%, but incoming calls are intermittent. ~50% ok, ~50% no incoming audio, and outgoing audio always works. I'm using a Linksys PAP2-NA. Any ideas of what it might be or where I should be looking? Thanks

PPPoE was down from 00h38 to 00h54 Wednesday morning at at least two of my sites (VDSL and ADSL in different communities). I don't see any mention of it on Teksavvy's network status page. Can we get a comment from TSI? -- db

[DSL] IPv6

I recently signed up to Beta Test IPv6. I thought I'd be OK, because I have an IPv6 "capable" router, the Linksys EA6400. I set it to Automatic and changed the login to @hsiservice.net I'm getting IPv6 addresses on my laptop, inside my LAN, matching the /56 addresses, so it's obviously working. I'm even getting IPv6 DNS server, however, when I access ipv6.google.com or check it via www.ipv6-test.com, it's showing I'm not using IPv6 on my outbound. My troubleshooting says my router is not getting an IPv6 address, but my internal devices are. Any ideas? I seem to have limited ability to make this work with this router. I may have to get a WRT / Tomato router to make this work, from the looks of it. ---------------------------------------------- Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 74-46-A0-3A-14-E4 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Temporary IPv6 Address. . . . . . : 2607:f2c0:f00f:2800:696b:3502:xxxx.yyyy(Deprecated) IPv6 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 2607:f2c0:f00f:2800:7523:eb18:xxxx.yyyy(Deprecated) Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::7523:eb18:9924:7308%12(Preferred) IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.120(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : March 18, 2014 12:22:42 AM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : March 19, 2014 1:08:41 AM Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 259278496 DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : 00-01-00-01-19-D6-15-5D-74-46-A0-3A-14-E4 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 2607:f2c0:f00f:2800:4af8:b3ff:aaaa.bbbb 192.168.1.1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

Why are our available uploads speeds lagging so much?

I'm on a Cable 28/1 plan in Ontario, and discovered via Ookla that my upload speed is now considered feeble. http://www.netindex.com/upload/ Global Upload: 7.7 Mbps Canada Upload: 5.7 Mbps (53rd of 189 countries) Toronto Upload: 5.5Mbps (35th of 514 cities) Yet four of the five service levels I'm offered don't beat any of these averages (and the fifth is 150/10) There's also a ranking of the 54 ISPs in Toronto 1) Beanfield 73.73 Mbps (on fiber) 3) Cogeco 42.15 17) Bell 6.84 24) Rogers 4.45 36) TekSavvy 2.45 54) Avante 0.37 I've heard that the speed is available now, and has been for some time. However, the providers don't want to tip their hands as to what is possible and prefer to announce speed increases only when it suits them. What do you think?

The Teksavvy Difference: Net Access Cost Becoming Excessive

$

I was reading the article Canada's Digital Divide Persists, CIRA Report Shows today and it had a link to an article from a few months ago entitled Digital Divide: Canada's Poorest Sacrifice Basic Needs To Get Connected. In the article, they specifically state: "He’s heard TekSavvy is cheaper, but can’t understand the differences between the advertised packages." I know Teksavvy now has the Find Your Plan, but has Canadian Internet access become so bad that simple tasks like "posting 51 or more image" or watching a combined "11 or more hours of YouTube" is considered to be "intensive" and "excessive"? I am a very big proponent of supporting Canadian companies that are trying to make an actual difference in the lives of Canadian citizens, something Teksavvy is actually trying to do while facing mega corporations that are hampering their growth on all angles. When discussing Internet access with clients, friends, family and neighbours, trying to explain to them what companies like Bell and Rogers are currently doing is hampering economic and technological grown in Canada, they look at me and seriously think I've lost it. While many can agree that Bell and Rogers aren't the best Canadian companies, the current notion that extra bandwidth costs are justified by the prices Bell and Rogers sets seems to have been fully ingrained into the Canadian public now. Explaining that there are cheaper alternatives and that they are being severely overcharged end up with comparisons like: "Well its just like water or electricity, you pay for what you use." Mission accomplished for the major ISP's in Canada. The above articles are just a couple of many articles recently that are showing that Canadian Internet access is becoming more confusing for people to understand and is becoming more unaffordable for many but at the same time becoming a necessity in their lives. Younger people are actually more open and willing to listen while explaining what's really going on in Canada. Many though can't understand simple concepts but understand the need to have "email" and "Internet access" and that they can only get that from Bell or Rogers. Those that have heard of Teksavvy or other "3rd Party" ISP's can't seem to understand how Teksavvy is beneficial to them and their families. "Aren't they just piggybacking on Bell and Rogers?" is something I hear quite often. A History of Teksavvy, a listing of CRTC proceeding and judgements past, present and upcoming and how they affect Teksavvy and Internet access in Canada, and a page explaining how Teksavvy works as a TPIA (DSL and Cable) to link people to might be very useful additions to the website so they start to understand why Teksavvy is different in a good way. IE: http://www.teksavvy.com/en/why-teksavvy/in-the-news/teksavvy-customer-notices/copyright-law-in-canada Many are grateful that there are alternatives currently in Canada like Teksavvy and hope for its continued success in the future to provide a fair price, with great service, and with no contracts and no hidden fees.

[TekTalk] Caller ID not displaying correctly on phone most of the time?

So I've had this annoying problem... As title says, most of the time the caller ID does not display the name or number! I just tried to call my house with my cell, and nothing, no name and no number. But I just logged in the tekportal portal, and lo and behold, my name is there under calls... So it can detect the name, yet it is not displayed on the phone. Like I said, it seems to be an intermittent issue, sometimes a name or number will appear, other times not, I think it just shows 'incoming call'...? Seems to be dependent on who calls. Any idea what the problem could be and how to fix? Thanks!

General update: Webmail, Zap the cap, Pay Now and MAC modem update

$

Hello all, We have a few updates for today. Webmail - We are in the process of migrating to the new Webmail and should have it transferred over within the next couple of hours. The webmail URL - webmail.teksavvy.com - will be pointed to the new system and the old system will simply drop off as the DNS entries age out. Specifically, the contacts are the primary thing that we are migrating over to the new webmail and so if you go to the webmail interface and you find that its a new interface and that your contacts are not there yet, just wait a bit, they will all show up. And if somehow we run into problems, the old systems are completely untouched and we can just revert back if needed. The new system is improved in a number of ways, you can see from the beta post what's changed: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29012552-Email-BETA-Webmail-update. Zap the cap - That's what we are calling the opt-in feature I had mentioned here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28902002-BETA-my-account-portal-v2-need-your-help - The portal has been, or is in the process of being updated right now with this new beta feature. In this beta release, the functionality for the rate-limiting will be in place however the full system will not be implemented until next month. In this release you can turn the feature on and from the hours of 8pm to midnight the rate limit will be in place until you remove it. It takes 10-20 minutes to activate or deactivate. The system is linked to the speed of your package. In order for this to work across all platforms both DSL and cable we had to pick thresholds. Those are: 3, 6, 9, 12 and a max of 15mbit/s. So depending on your package, you will fall into one of those brackets. When we looked at all the different speeds across all vendors, it became obvious that we just had to pick speeds and apply them to the various packages otherwise it was just too complicated. This is currently implemented for rCable, cCable and DSL in Ontario and Quebec. Much work went into this and we're excited to kick this off. Pay now - This option will allow you to pay your bill via the MyAccount portal. We get many calls for payments and we believe this will save time for everybody while making sure it is still very secure. MAC modem update (for rCable, vCable and cCable internet users only) - This is a simple tool where you can submit your correct MAC address in case your usage does not show up properly. The MAC address is what links your account with our systems. It's how we know who you are. If you look on the back of your modem it says what your modem MAC address is. Those addresses are unique to your modem and are assigned by the modem manufacturer. The reason for this tool is because some users MAC addresses are incorrect in our records and we may need your help to correct them. This provides a simple way to fix it. This is important because we must ensure that there are no other users on our network that should not be and as well to make sure that your usage is correctly linked to your account. To ensure this, we will be slowing down those users where we know our records are incorrect in order to prompt a fix. This tool is for those situations. Once we receive a request, we will check to make sure the updated MAC is accurate and we will update our records. We may also need to update our vendors records also since there may be discrepancies there also. If you know your MAC address is not accurate, please be sure to correct it as soon as possible. We will be sending out a customer notice to announce these updates later today or tomorrow. -- Marc - CEO/TekSavvy

[TekTalk] My TekTalk is broken

I have an unlocked Cisco/Linksys SPA-3102 that has been working fine for the last year. However today I found that I can't initiate outgoing calls. Incoming works fine, just no outgoing. My internet works fine, speed test reports good UL/DL speeds. The tech that I spoke to indicated that he would escalate the ticket to the next level, but I suspect that since it is an unlocked device that I won't get much more assistance. Any anyone experienced anything similar, before I replace it I will blank it out and reconfigure it from scratch.

[Cable] What cable modem is currently the best, in your opinion?

What is the best in terms of reliability, speed, stability, etc? I've pretty much narrowed it down to the: Thomson DCM 476 and the Motorola SB6121. They both seem like good modems via customer reviews. Teksavvy staff seems to recommend the DCM 476 though. What do you guys think?

[Portal] MYACCOUNT: API KEY MANAGEMENT

$

0
Hey all, We have introduced a new feature in the MyAccount customer portal; API Key Management! This feature enables you to generate an API key which will allow you to securely pull portal information (starting with usage history) into third party applications. API Keys can be created and revoked an unlimited amount of times and will look like the following: B6E8F3AE8E00E4235A1E4CFAD0C8535E In case you're wondering what this is all about.. well, it's a bit technical but it allows programmers to write software that can be useful to you. That software would ask you to generate a key from the MyAccount portal and enter it into that software. This allows the software to communicate with our servers and send data from the portal, to the application. When you generate that key and enter it, you are basically telling TekSavvy that it's ok for us to send your data to that software. This is why we tell you to use it at your own risk since we did not build those tools. API is an acronym that mean's: Application Programming Interface Encryption: all data is encrypted and is sent using the same encryption as the MyAccount portal. PLEASE NOTE: - If you generate a new key, you will need to re-enter it into your tools. - TekSavvy is not responsible for the development or distribution of third party tools. As such, third party tools are used at your own risk. - TekSavvy is not liable for any damages incurred by the use of third party applications. -- Marc - CEO/TekSavvy

Teksavvy Install He*% and Hijinks With Bell

$

So I am now on TSI 25/10 VDSL. What a long road it has been in one week. Monday- contract installer arrives. Installs POTS, failing to read the instructions and puts the bare wires in the connectors vs. the unstripped wires (the POTS uses blades like an RJ45 ethernet plug to make the connection). He also fastens it to the wall up but pressed up hard, against another old 2nd line demarc inside and thus breaks off the little wires. And there is this anti-corrosive gloop inside and the broken wires are glued into the holes such that you cannot remove them to put the wires in properly. He doesn't notice the break and I don't see it until later. No dial tone, nor DSL light. He calls Bell. They are working on the line (but they shouldn't cut off the phone doing so). Bell says he can go, they will come out before 9. 9 pm comes and goes. No dial tone. No DSL. No Bell. I call Bell, they agree to send someone Tuesday. Tuesday No dial tone - they call me at work, say they will come 5-9 pm. An hour later Bell calls, where am I? I say, well it is 11 a.m. and that is not 5-9 pm, is it? Bell tech says they told him all day, not 5-9. Will send someone 5-9 pm. 5-9 pm comes (and goes). No Bell tech. I call Bell, they say it is marked completed. No dial tone. They say tech says there is dial tone at the demarc outside. I have no dial tone inside. So I think. The Bell tech, like a cat in the night, came to the house, tested the signal at the demarc and left without even knocking on the door to say it works. Nice service. So he has a dial tone outside, I have none inside. Until I phoned I did not even know it was restored. I take matters into my own hands. Remove incoming line from POTS. It is only two wires and with a VOM I figure out which is ring and which is tip. Blue is ring, in my case. (PS if you want to test this, connect the RED probe on a VOM to a ground, and test with the black probe. Ring has 48V DC [technically -48V] so that's why you reverse the probes). I strip an old phone line to bare wires and plug into a basic phone handset and I touch the bare wires to the incoming line wires. Voila! I have a dial tone. POTS + wires = no dial tone. Wires on their own = dial tone. And the DSL light is on now. Not the internet one though. So the line part and the modem part of the POTS seem to work after I jammed the line wires back into the POTS. Even though the clips do not close. I figure you can connect the POTS via the RJ11 phone jacks instead of the defunct connectors on the back. I wire two phone plugs with wires (from the wire I made to test the line). Figure out which has to be ring and which tip (hint: 2nd connector in the RJ11 plug has to be ring). Connect the incoming line to the line jack on the front of the POTS. The two lines to the house phone lines to the phone jack on the POTS. Modem is connected to the modem jack on the POTS. None of the read connectors are being used because the line ones are broken with stuck wire pieces and I don't think the phone ones work at all. Voila #2!. I have a dial tone, and the DSL light but no internet. Call Teksavvy. They tell me Bell set the line to ADSL not VDSL and the modem is VDSL. So she walks me through the VDSL to ADSL change in the SmartRG modem. To at least test the internet works. And work it does. Voila #3!. I have 6 mb/sec ADSL. Yay. She files a ticket to Bell to provision the line as VDSL. Warns me that when they do, the modem will not work again, because it has to be set to VDSL. I download the VDSL config file from Teksavvy to do this. And orders up a reinstall of the POTS properly without broken stuck little wires inside. And figures maybe 48 hours. Wednesday Bell calls me in the day, says the VDSL is now done but he can't test the line. (This is because the modem is set for ADSL and won't connect now) I get home, and the internet light is out. I change to VDSL using the Teksavvy config file. Voila #4!. 25 mb/sec VDSL. I then have to redo all my settings, LAN, passwords, Wifi and the like. Tip: if you have to do this VDSL to ADSL to VDSL dance, first save the VDSL config file to your computer. When you want to switch back, load that file, as it will have your settings, passwords, LAN IP etc. Friday Tonight, no dial tone. I actually did not check Wednesday or Thursday if I had a dial tone on the phone. I guess I did not. Every time Bell touches the line to add or change DSL they lose the dial tone. I call for a service call for Saturday. I figure as part of that they will do diagnostics at their end. And guess what - voila #5! An hour or so later, they put the dial tone back and I still have VDSL. I am not cancelling the service call for tomorrow. Let them come and test it all again, the loons. So, one clueless contractor, two Bell techs that sneak into your neighbourhood but don't bother to tell you, a home made wiring job with spare RJ11 plugs to take the place of the botched POTS installation. And it's done. I am sorely tempted to just leave it alone or get a two line splitter, add one simple inline DSL filter on the phone side, install it in the basement so it filters the whole home and connect the line directly to the modem. Take out the POTS entirely. Lesson learned - always check your dial tone after they go anywhere near your lines. Learn which lines are which, it's not hard and there are only two that do anything. Have some spare parts, wire and a soldering iron handy. Also even though Teksavvy could not contact Bell to do the service they were pretty good at helping me set things up and get the ADSL to VSDL situation resolved.

Hi there, I was wondering: what's the status of Quebec cable customer cap? Unlimited status from 2 am to 8 am? Unlimited upload all the time? Possibility to zap the cap? ETA on the availability of getting our cap status on my portal? Sorry if is have been discussed in the last weeks, I couldn't find a thread and wasn't around for a couple of months (actually, I jumped on board last summer with the 2am to 2am + upload all day unlimited) Thanks, (P.S. Service has been perfect since day one.. speed A1 all the one.. except one time that I suspect videotron just disconnected cable competitors for fun (in the same two weeks, three friends including me with either teksavy or ebox has been disconnected by ''accident''... yeah right.)

Cogeco offers 14/1 Mbps max, Tek offers only 10/1. Am I right in thinking this actually is showing that there is more bandwidth than what they both are offering publicly? How much bandwidth can this carry? I know diddly about cable modems, this is the first cable internet we've ever had. A Bell guy told me that they had recently put fibre into their gateway boxes to our neighbourhood, no idea if that could be involved in this or not.
