Frequent timeouts for programs connecting to the internet?
Hi, I've been having a lot of problems ever since I signed up with Teksavvy with programs that connect to the internet timing out frequently when they try to connect.
By this I mean things like VOIP programs (Teamspeak, etc), games that need to connect to the internet, SVN repositories, so on and so forth -- at least half of the time, my first attempts to launch these programs time out and fail, and occasionally it can take me up to 5 attempts to get them to connect before they finally do.
I've contacted tech support and thought I had the issue pegged with having to re-enter my Teksavvy info on my modem's connection hub, but this turned out to not be the problem as it continues to persist.
Any ideas? Is it the service, or maybe my lines, or something with the modem, etc?
Should note this has occurred since day 1 of the service about 3 weeks ago.

[Cable] A positive for Teksavvy
I ordered cable for my new home. Called and everything went smoothly over the phone to order my cable connection. Contracted tech came out and installed the line properly and quickly. Hooked up the modem and everything was fine. Got a call from an account rep and made sure everything was good.
I get the speeds I'm paying for and haven't had any issues whatsoever. I know if I do have issues, Teksavvy will be there. This is why I've always been a customer and my parents have Teksavvy as well.
Thanks Teksavvy for being reasonably priced.

FTTH
Is there anyway of knowing when will FTTH be available at my place?
I have a neighbor 1KM from me who just got connected to a 50/10 profile and got 52/56 on a speedtest result.
I called Bhell and despite telling them he's only 1KM from me they could not give me an answer?
Anyway of finding out?
Thanks

SmartRG custom config (HavestGold v1.03)
UPDATED 2014-01-05
This configuration file was created on a whim ultimately spurred by MaynardKrebs and took a life of its own.
After looking into some issues presented here (https://secure.dslreports.com/forum/r28922819-DSL-SmartRG-feature-requests) and stumbled upon myself, I have made an updated configuration file. Clarification and explanations below.
SECURITY: There is a fairly major security concern in regard to the current SmartRG Firmware leaving an open port on WAN. The port in question is TCP 30005, supposedly used for management through TR-69. No matter how I tried disabling the TR-069 client access control (inform disabled, binding interface to LAN or Loopback, etc.) the SmartRG always had port 30005 open to the internet. I even tried setting up a blackhole forwarding for port 30005 toward an unused private IP, but it was to no avail (this should work for most routers even the dodgy ones). Hence, I am assuming that the internal rule table has port 30005 by default open and has precedence over whatever rules created through the web interface. This should never have happened. For those that can, please use the SmartRG in bridge mode immediately.
Therefore, in addition to what I had previously done to disable TR-69, I added a random username/password for the Connection Request Authentication. I would recommend changing this to anything long and with high entropy as there is not need to remember it.
Moreover, as I was performing DNS caching tests and response time test with various private and public DNS servers, I noticed that the SmartRG would freeze up or be unresponsive for a short period of time; unable to access local or internet resources, even pinging the SmartRG (10.10.10.10) would fail. Assuming that DNS proxying is overwhelming the CPU load time, or that priority for dnsproxy is set improperly, I decided to disable DNS proxying on the SmartRG entirely until this issue is resolved.
Lastly, I may have resolved the NTP sync issue (read more in annex at bottom), but please note that the NTP servers I set in the configuration file are optimized for those having the bulk of their connections transiting through the Torix internet exchange (which should encompass most users from Ontario and Quebec). Otherwise, please change the NTP servers to suitable low latency ones for your area.
Detailed configuration changes are as follow:
1. "<X_SmartRG_COM_StingerMode>TRUE</X_SmartRG_COM_StingerMode>" included
2. Log level is set at "Informational" while displayed log level is set at "Warning"
3. ICMP packets from WAN are replied to (for line monitoring and ping test)
4. UPnP is disabled (I'm somewhat paranoid, you can turn it on at your leisure)
5. DNS proxying domain name set to "local.net" and host to "SmartRG"
6. TR-69 Management disabled
a. Host changed to "acs.teksavvy.com" instead of "acs.clearaccess.com"
b. Binding interface is on LAN side
c. Authentication set to random username/password (change it to anything long and random)
d. Inform interval increased to 600000 seconds (about 7 days)
7. NTP server enabled and set to sync with "pool.ntp.org", "ntp1.ona.org", "clock.nyc.he.net"
8. Interface color changed to "Harvest Gold/Black"
9. LAN changed to 10.*.*.* IP range:
a. SmartRG will have an IP of 10.10.10.10
b. Other network devices will receive IP from DHCP in the range 10.10.10.[11-199]
10. Static address of 10.10.10.1 has been assigned for MAC address "00:00:00:00:00:AA"
a. Above static address is enabled by default.
b. 10.10.10.1 is set as DMZ.
If you want to test stuff with an unfiltered access to the Internet (for troubleshooting or whatever) use a custom MAC address of "00:00:00:00:00:AA" on the interface you want 10.10.10.1 to be assigned by DHCP.
Wireless related changes:
11. Main SSID changed to "PRINTER3217" and access point is hidden (change it to whatever you see fit)
12. Wi-fi encryption uses WPA2-PSK with "OurCivilization,Of8083Million,HasYetToEvenReachType1" as password.
13. Default WEP key changed to "PerSisTenSeWASkeyToTheirSUCCESS"
14. In advanced mode I tried to reduced the power output and CPU usage to a workable minimum :
a. DTIM interval increased to 20
b. Beacon interval set to 250
c. Transmit power reduced to 20%
d. WMM APSD disabled
e. WMM advertise disabled (basic page)
You will need to change these to suit your particular needs.
15. Guest clients limited to 16 for each virtual access points and all clients are isolated from each other.
PPPoE related changes:
16. TekSavvy used as descriptive name instead of "pppoe_0_1_1.35"
17. You need to replace "___YOURLOGIN__" with your respective login and its password.
18. MTU size set to 1492 (you may need to lower it)
19. Inactivity Timeout is set to 90 minutes for Dial on demand (I prefer not having an active connection when not in use)
Overall, this custom configuration has a "Harvest Gold + Black" theme with: Wi-fi disabled, TR-69 disabled, UPnP disabled, DNS proxy disabled, Dial on demand enabled, ICMP enabled, NTP enabled and various changes in DCHP and Wi-Fi settings. There is no port forwarding in place, it is up to you to add them if you need them.
Theme wise I could have done a lot better; but the options are limited, if there was a way to inject CSS styling in the config file I would have changed everything (confined within limits of the DOM structure though).
If other SmartRG users like this config file and have further suggestions or particular issues they wish to share, I'll be happy to oblige.
ATTENTION: Make a backup of your current settings before using this, in case everything goes nuts (and a singularity is generated inside the SmartRG ^_^;). Default LAN IP will change, you will need to use 10.10.10.10 to access the SmartRG's web interface. Admin password is the same, I have not changed anything in regard to "admin", "support", and "user" accounts.
Annex:
I have noticed multiple occurrence of the following in the system log:
Jan 1 00:00:16 daemon err syslog: caTmBlk:Time Blocking: Shutting down, sig -1
This would lead me to think that for some reason NTP synchronization is being blocked internally (either by firewall, wrong binding interface, domain name resolution issues or something else entirely). After playing around with various settings, I think I may have resolved the issue with NTP (at least for me). The gist of what I did was to change NTP servers (at times using direct IP instead of domain names), changing the timezone (to GMT, then EST), adding port forwarding rules (obviously overkill and not necessary as per the new working config file) and enabling/disabling NTP while doing the changes.
The three server used in the config file are pool.ntp.org (a major decentralized time server pool, more info: http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Servers/WebHome), ntp1.ona.org (NTP server from the Ontario Nurses' Association managed by Ian Pattison, amongst the lowest latency server for Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and surrounding area, more info: http://www.ona.org/) and clock.nyc.he.net (run by Hurricane Electric, also providing a good portion of upstream internet transit for TekSavvy, more info: https://www.he.net/adm/ntp.html).
I have also noticed that sometimes multicast (or something similar) is being used on all LAN interface for certain packets/frames even while multicast is disabled by default in the basic configuration. I have yet to delve into this peculiarity, and this might as well just be something caused by my other devices. For now just mentioning something interesting.

NetGear DGND3700 Modem/Router on VDSL2
Hi All,
Wondering is anyone has experience with this on an IKNS? Works GREAT on ADSL2+ and my max line down attainable is 24MB supposedly if Bell supported that. Using the newer custom firmware I can enable VDSL2 which they took away back when they released the first firmware past shipping. I haven't bothered to update it yet, but the chip is a Broadcom BCM6368 using driver blob A2pv6C035m.d23k.
(the custom firmware also updated the broadcom driver)
So, I can do VDSL2+. The chipset on the modem is a Broadcom (BCM6368), and I am connected to an IKNS.
I've searched, but is the IKNS happy or unhappy with broadcom? Will the IKNS work with anything except a bell sagemcom / cellpipe?
Cheers and thanks in advance!

[Cable] Massive bandwidth overage
Wow, I just checked the portal and according to this I have gone over my 300 gb! I have NEVER gone over even with heavy download months.
Does this mean I will be charged overages ?
TekSavvy Extreme Cable 28 388.36 GB (monthly bandwidth) 88.36 GB (in overages!)
This is from Dec 1 to the 20th. I haven't done much downloading so I am not sure this makes sense.
My son has been home sick and he has been watching netflix every day between 9am and 3pm. Could it really rack up over 300gb in 20 days of Netflix?

[DSL] Is it possible to get Teksavvy DSL without cancelling Bell DSL?
I'm trying to convince the people I live with to switch from Bell to Teksavvy. While I'm sure you can all vouch that it's perfectly fine and a good choice, they are not so convinced of how Teksavvy will be and no amount of reviews can sway them. They currently have a package with Bell that is quite a bit discounted and they do not want to cancel and try Teksavvy as they fear it could be worse.
They are willing to try Teksavvy for a month and switch if they're happy, the problem is every single Teksavvy support has said we need to cancel Bell first through a 30 day notice. They will not do this, they want to be happy with Teksavvy first. I am totally fine fronting the setup fee and first month cost for Teksavvy to try and convince them, the problem is that from what I have found through googling, this isn't possible without cancelling Bell.
Is there any way to have these 2 services in parallel (Even if we can only connect to one at once, jsut without cancelling Bell) for a month?

[Cable] Slow Speeds in Chatham CCable
Anyone else in Chatham getting slow download speeds for cable?
A friend and I both did speed tests and we're getting anywhere from .25 to .50 download speeds when we should be getting 20 normally.
Anyone else with similar results or is it somehow just us 2? Signal levels look fine I think.

[DSL] DSL 7 speeds, downgrading from 15->7
I usually get > 15 Mbps download (average 15.23 Mbps) and .688 Mbps average upload with the DSL 15-1 service. So can I expect to get a similar performance if I downgrade to the DSL 7 service i.e. average of ~7 Mbps download and similar average upload as above?
I also would like to confirm that it is a $25 speed change fee to go from DSL 15 to DSL 7, with no technician visit required and no internet downtime. And also can this speed change take place on a weekend or is it weekdays only?

[DSL] Multiple IP addresses
Hello,
I've ordered 2 extra public IP addresses for my DSL service to be setup for a couple of servers at home (NAT is not an option). I have the Sagemcom F@ST 2864 Modem, which came with a Bell custom image and doesn't let me use bridging and not feeling like 'hacking' into it for the extra features like others threads recommend.
This is what I have from Teksavvy:
IP Information
Single: 69.xxx.yyy.47/30: 76.aaa.bbb.64 / 255.255.255.252
What I want is to keep my 69.xxx.yyy.47/30 for my Internet normal home access and use the 76.aaa.bbb.64/30 for a server.
What do I need to accomplish this? What would you recommend?
Would getting a SmartRG modem to replace the Sagecomm help?
I understand a lot of the networking stuff but never done something like this before. From what I've been reading, I could setup the SmartRG for bridging easily and use the PC to start a PPPoE connection, but wouldn't that make the Linux PC get the 69.xxx.yyy.47/30 IP addresses? Can I have a router start another PPPoE connection and get one of my IP through the SmartRG as well?
And yes, I know I was getting into this mess when I got the extra IP addresses, let's just say I'm expecting to learn something new from this :)
Thanks for any help

Why such a big premium for unlimited on Teksavvy Cable 150?
This is probably covered in another thread so can someone please point me there - I tried searching but I don't find the search function on DSL all that great.
When I look at the pricing for the various speeds that Teksavvy offers for cable the premium for unlimited tends to be about 50-60% of the capped service. But for the 150 service there is well over a 100% premium. I assume this is due to the wholesale pricing from the likes of Rogers - is that correct? Or is there some other reason?

Any transition issues these days Rogers - > Teksavvy cable?
I really want to move from Rogers Ultimate to Teksavvy 150 service to get away from overrage fees. I was going to do this a few months ago but I was somewhat concerned about support issues at Teksavvy - many of which seemed to actually be Rogers' fault.
So what's the current status of switching from Rogers to Teksavvy cable 150? Are folks having issues or does it generally go fairly smoothly?
FYI - we generally blow through the cap largely due to streaming of video, especially Amazon Live Streaming (using Unblockus) as it uses WAY more bandwidth than Netflix, but NickJr shows switched from Netflix to Amazon last May. I am assuming that service should continue to work fine with the Teksavvy 150/10 service?
