I am a Teksaavy "legacy" DLS 6/.8 customer - that is, grandfathered to no cap usage, at $32.99 a month. I notice that Teksavvy offers DSL 15/1 at the same price (i.e., $32.99), albeit with a 300 GB usage cap. I am unlikely to exceed this cap, as my limited monitoring of my usage suggests I am at about 100 GB per month, and (knock on wood with respect to the net neutrality ruling in the States), it isn't likely to change much in the foreseeable future.
My question is will I notice a practical difference if I change service from 6/.8 to 15/1? My most intensive internet usage is Netflix (at full HD), German online television, much of which is also HD or close to, and Skype video calls. We've had relatively little problem downstreaming full HD from Netflix, although once in a while it will pause and it does take a minute or two at the start of shows to switch to HD (while the buffer is filling up). With the German video, 75% of the time, I can watch at the highest resolution offered (close to or at HD levels). The rest of the time, I have to choose a lower resolution, which I would rather not. With Skype video calls (with friends in Germany who have 25/10 service, or there-abouts), the resolution jumps around from great to terrible. Normally it is OK.
Given that the download/upload numbers for DSL 15/1 service are "maximum" numbers, it occurs to me that if there are other bottlenecks limiting my obtained speeds, then the higher max may not amount to much in practical terms (i.e., maybe there are bottlenecks between the German TV servers and Teksavvy). The Teksavvy site does show that my location is suitable for service up to and including DSL 25/10. I just did an Ookla speedtest showing my actual obtained speeds as 2.65/.66, with as I said above, my current 6/.8 service. I understand also there is a $50 charge for a change in service. I am also using a Speedtouch 516 modem, and would be interested to know whether it is compatible with the 15/1 service.
So, should I switch?
