BETA my account portal v2 - need your help

Hey all, So, we are preparing for the second milestone for the new beta my account portal (myaccount.teksavvy.com) and I wanted to get some feedback before we go too far with it. The first part is Notifications (For Usage Threshold Warnings); we would send email as well as display in the portal notifications at 75%, 90% and 100% of the usage cap. Second, we want to implement an opt-in usage option where, in exchange for unlimited usage all day every day, we would rate limit the max speed of your subscribed speed to half speed between the hours of 8pm and midnight. How it would work is that you would need to select it in the my account portal for one month at a time in the prior period. I.e. You click the option in the portal and next months service would have it enabled for that entire month. If you didn't want it for the next month, you unselect it in the current month and it would get turned off for the next month. When it's enabled, usage cap is turned off and speeds are normal except for the hours between 8pm and midnight each night. This would only be available for 300gig usage packages. When enabled a re-occurring charge will be added to act as an indicator that this is in effect and overages would not be billed if any. If you try it and you don't like it, you have the first ten days of the month to disable it and usage for those days would count towards your usage cap as they normally would have. Timing for when this might be available is not yet known. Once we settle on these details we will be able to set a target date. Thoughts? -- Marc - CEO/TekSavvy

[DSL] Horrible installation

Hi all, I just wanted to share my experiences with two recent upgrades for comparison. In the past week I have upgraded two ADSL (5/6mbps services) to VDSL (25/10 and 15/10). One was with TekSavvy and the other was Bell. It's a bit of a rant :) The Bell installation was first. The installation window was from 12-5pm. Tech arrived at 3pm. He was very courteous and helpful. He introduced himself, made sure I was doing an upgrade and then left to do some work outside. He said he would be back in a bit. While he was gone my internet stopped working. When he came back he made sure the modem was where I wanted it or else he would move it to my preferred location. He removed the old modem and installed the new one and reconnected all the wires. He also verified the internet was up and running to all my devices before he left. The whole process went quite smoothly. The second installation, TekSavvy was quite a different experience. The installation window was from 12-9pm. Tech arrived at 8pm O_o! He seemed to be in quite a rush (and I understand this since it's 8pm in the evening...). He made some changes to the demarc location (in my basement). Unplugged my old modem from the router and line. Didn't connect anything back to the demarc. Told me to plug in the modem and it should work. Then he left. Wonderful! So I take my SmartRG modem and plug it in. I waited a bit and the internet does not work. I have DSL light but no internet light. So I plug back in the old modem and the internet starts working again! So I call TekSavvy tech support and ask if everything has been upgraded on their end. Tech puts me on hold for 5 minutes and then comes back and confirms everything is upgraded. I explain to him that in my previous experience if the connection has been upgraded, then my old ADSL modem shouldn't work. But he denies this and said they both should work. So I work with him for almost 2 hours on the phone, all the time trying to convince him that something is not done on their side since my old modem still works but he continues to disagree with me. He makes me do a bunch of resets and configuration changes on the modem. Says he's 100% sure my modem is in bridge mode and I need to create a PPPoE connection on my computer. Although I'm sure it's not in bridge mode. Then at almost 2 hours into the call he says he needs to send me some files to configure the modem. He sends me an ADSL configuration file for the SmartRG. I load it and now I have internet with my SmartRG (although with my original 5mbps profile). He now says "Oh and I noticed you are still on the old platform. You should be upgraded to the new platform within 24 hours... DUH! The exact thing I asked him at the beginning of this 2 hour nightmare. I just hang up on him, reset the SmartRG to defaults, plug in my old modem and have my internet back. Now I wait patiently for the switch and my internet to die, at which point I will plug back in the SmartRG and hope for the best.

[DSL] SmartRG (50/10 profile) VPN speeds

Folks, anyone who is on VDSL 50/10 + SmartRG as a modem, using VPN services like Private Internet Access - what speeds are you getting? The best speed I am getting from a PC using PIA's client to US East (the fastest) server is only ~ 25Mbps, while I am clocking ~47Mbps on direct speed test. While I am trying to investigate the issue with the VPN provider (so far not very successfully), I was wondering if other people are having the same performance degradation or it is just me. For reference, when I was on 25/10 profile, I was getting ~23Mbps down from the same PIA server... doubling my internet speed practically did not get anything :(

[Cable] Motorola SB6121

Hey, I just upgraded my service from 18mbps to the 25mbps since the 18mbps package was discontinued, so I had to buy a new modem, the SB6121. I bought it from NewEgg and it came with firmware version 1.0.5.1, but their supported version is 1.0.6.12, was wondering am I still able to use this firmware or do I need to return this and get one with a compatible firmware since this modem is not consumer updatable... Thanks!

I have an SB6120 that I bought from TSI a couple of years ago for use on rCable. I've been off TSI cable for a couple of years and want to use it with Comcast for a few months. Do I need to do anything at this end, e.g. is it possible Comcast will identify it as still used on TSI (or Rogers)? Thanks! =aw -- Webber's occasional bargain blog: www.wwwebber.com

[DSL] vdsl provisioning

Hey everyone, I know I saw this topic a while back, but I A) can't remember what exactly was said, B) can't find it in search, so I ask again. 1) I could swear I remember it being said that unlike legacy DSL where they provision you at x and you only get x-overhead speeds, VDSL provisions you at x+overhead so that you get x speeds - is this true? 2) I think the salesperson that I talked to last week said that they can't provision VDSL unless there's at least 7mbit upstream attainable (or something like this) where the gentleman I talked to the other day didn't mention - is that also true? Just trying to temper/develop some expectations... thanks!

hardware question

I have been having sync issues for awhile. I have been just too busy to care for the most part but I now have some downtime. In researching it seems that it might be the wifi part of my router setup. I use the old 2wire and I love it for its strength and well.. I paid 25$. I am on a 7/1 profile. The internet isn't the end all of my life so I don't want or need the best but reliable would be nice...so..if the wifi part of the 2wire is flaky can I just buy a wifi router and connect that to the 2wire and leave the 2wires wifi off? This may be a simple question for most but I ask anyway:) I have read that it is better that the modem and router/wifi is separate anyway ..is that correct? If this will work if there any wifi router that anyone would suggest?..for say 50$...don't want to spend too much on accessing Pron! thanks scott

Teksaavy / Bell and torrents (again)

Hi, I know this has been answered before but I think my issue is different : I set max connexion to 1024, time outs to 60 sec in my torrent client and limit download to 900kb !! (I'm on 25/10 DSL). I'm using Linksys E2000 with DDWRT. Everytime or almost I torrent : the whole network goes down. No, in fact, this isn't true, the whole DNS goes down. For some reason, I still can connect to some direct IPs but the whole DNS lookup is gone. Even weirder, if I host a service, like an IRC server, people don't get booted off... but I cannot, for instance, navigate to google.com... Most of the time, if I do nothing, it would eventually comes back after, say, from 2 minutes to 30. In order to single out the defective unit, I have done a few tests : When it crashes, most of the time (not always), a router reboot will do it. But, for other times, I need to hard reset the BELL MODEM. With all this indications, I firmly believe that the BELL modem is in cause since my router says it wasn't disconnected from WAN. I run a few services on my fixed IP so I might have more connexion that the average guy (web servers, databases...) but still, not busy enough to crash a network. Last time it happened, I called teksaavy and appart from making me hard reset the BELL modem, there is no solution. So question is : is this happened to other people ? Would my BELL modem defective or this is just the poor limitation of the BELL modem ? Or even, do BELL actually shutdown your services when torrenting (Which I do believe).

[Cable] Losing connection for a few seconds

Over the last week or two I have been noticing that my cable connection just dies at random times for a few seconds and then comes back. If I am browsing pages then everything will just stop loading for a bit, but then come back in after about 10 seconds. When I play Counter Strike my game freezes and I get a message stating that there is a connection problem but then after a short time it comes back. I am the only one on the server who has such issues so it's probably not a game or server issue. While this happens the modem lights stay solid blue the whole time, and my ping is alright. Speed tests seem to be normal for the most part except once in a while the upload will be much slower than usual. The problem seems to occur once every 5-15 minutes, and more often at peak times. My stats are looking a little different as the power levels are around 6 and in the past they would be closer to 1 or 2. I don't know when that changed though since I haven't looked at my stats in a long time. I don't know if it is related but about a month ago Rogers was doing some work on my street and dug some holes in a few places. Once that snow storm came a few weeks ago they just placed some steel covers over the holes, fenced them off and left them like that since then. I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that they haven't finished the work, or if the water/snow has been getting down into those pits in the street.

SmartRG modem access thru router

This might be an interesting topic for people who want to access their SmartRG modem from behind the router (i.e. from a PC connected to the home network) My previous modem - Sagemcom - I was able to access directly by typing 192.168.2.1 with no voodoo magic or tricks involved - and it was great as I could reboot the modem remotely. Unfortunately, with SmartRG I cannot do the same thing - 192.168.1.1 (default IP address of the modem) simply does not resolve (my network is 192.168.0.xxx) The router I am using is ASUS RT-AC56U running the latest version of Merlin Firmware (so the same procedure will apply to N66U/AC66U/AC68U routers) Any ideas?

SmartRG vs Sagemcom in proper bridge mode

All, Haven't paid much attention to this issue so wondering if someone on VDSL2 tiers could weigh in. I'm currently using a Sagemcom 2864, "unlocked" and running in proper bridge mode. I'm doing this on a 50/10 plan to an ASUS router. Any advantage to moving to the SmartRG as a purchased modem vs just buying the Sagemcom outright? Thanks! d

I haven't had internet for the past two days due I believe to a flood in Bell's Simpson Ave. central office(I'm at Jones and Danforth Ave.). Internet came back this mourning but gmail is still inaccessible. So I'm wondering why every other website would work except gmail(assuming gmails not down). Now as I'm typing this gmail just came back up.

[Home Phone] 'F'n bell won't reconnect downed line

Sorry for the long post, but I have to get this off my chest. This past Thursday morning (Jan 2nd) what I guess was a truck, snagged the wire coming into my house from across the road. No internet and no phone. I promptly called Teksavvy, who contacted Bell and arranged for a reconnection. The choice was Friday during the day or Saturday 12 to 4. I took the Saturday one so I could be there to verify every thing was in working order. When I got home, using my cell I checked the messages for the home phone. There was an automated message from Bell. It said that their tech dept had been contacted about a problem with my line and asked me to participate in a survey about my experience. It left numbers to call back for the survey and for general enquiries. At work the next day my co-worker told me he switched his home phone between Christmas and New Years from Cogeco to Bell after the ice storm because his phone went dead even though he had power and no lines were down in his area. He was connected the next day! The tech guy was pissed because he had been forced back in from his vacation because of clause in their contract that said Bell can do this in cases of emergency, weather in this case. But he wasn't repairing downed lines, he was doing new installations. Saturday, no show. Call Teksavvy, who called Bell and where told by Bell that there was no repair ticket for my downed line. But they could send someone on Tues. or Wed. Took Tues. and Teksavvy gave the ticket number. So I called Bell back to do the survey and left an appropriate response. Then called the other number and got connected to the tech dept. Gave them the home phone and repair ticket number and was told that everything was set up to do the repair on Wed. Told them that wasn't good enough and after a long discussion they agreed to do the repair Mon. evening between 5 and 9. Great, down for 4.5 days but better than 7.5. Last night (Monday) I checked Bell's automated repair ticket update to find that yes someone is scheduled to fix the phone line between 5 and 9. A little later I heard something in the driveway where the phone line comes in. Took a quick peek outside and saw a Bell van parked across the road from my driveway. Good ran inside, got my coat and keys and move my truck so that the tech guy can park in the drive while he does the job. I back in the driveway so as soon as the truck was started the headlights are shining in his face. He turns from his tablet he working on and sees me leave to park up the street. Glances up from his tablet to see me come back and I go back in side. Half a hour went by and I didn't hear anything so I checked back outside, van's now gone and the line is still not connected. I waited until 8 before I called the automated update line again only to find out that the tech ran into a difficulty and couldn't do the job so I needed the call and reschedule. 25 minutes on hold to finally get someone only to be told that there wasn't any one scheduled to do the repair until Wednesday. ??? This person doesn't know how I could have gotten the automated messages I did because the ticket says Wednesday. I asked to be connected to the supervisor/manager. More wait time. This time I got a different story. First part was that the supervisor/manager that set up the Monday appointment didn't enter the information right so a tech couldn't have been sent to my house. When I pointed out the automated message had changed after the tech had left, he changed his story with no explanation as to why he left but still blamed the other supervisor/manager. So now I have another appointment for this morning (Tuesday) to have it repaired. Fingers crossed. On another note, my Lady and I are finally off of contract with our cell phones and can now leave another part of Bell/Hell behind us while saving a lot of money in extra fees. Going to sign up tonight. No contract, only the service we need. What a concept.
