Hi everybody,
Long time forum lurker and TekSavvy fan here.
After years of staying with Teksavvy's legacy 6mbit DSL service on an aging Cisco 2620, I think it's finally time to upgrade and get a faster Internet connection. I have crunched out some numbers, but it seems that both the VDSL (by Bell) and Cable (by Videotron) services are really close in terms of pricing (counting the dry loop for Bell as well).
So the million dollar question is: In Quebec (Montreal), should I get VDSL or Cable?
I do lots of VoIP so latency, jitter, and stability is of upmost importance. My current 6mbit connection has been rock solid, except that I'm now really starving for some more bandwidth.
Here's what I'd like to know from the experts and users around here:
- I have seen all the complains on the forums about the Rogers Cable POIs in Ontario being overloaded. Is this the case with either the Bell VDSL POIs/backhauls or the Videotron POIs/backhaul? Am I likely to run into limitations due to Teksavvy's interconnections during peak hours?
- What upload speeds am I likely to get with either VDSL and Cable? Am I really going to get a full 10mbit upload on either Bell or Videotron? Which service will get me the fastest and most consistent speeds?
- Are any of these service providers planning to increase their prices soon?
- With VDSL, can I run into issues that plagued legacy services (i.e.: being put on a far away remote and getting a fraction of the maximum speed)? I live right next to a remote and I get awesome line stats, but I heard that Bell can prioritize their customers and throw you anywhere they see fit.
- Do the activation fees include installation as well? (My equipment is near Bell's demarc, but the Videotron demarc is outside and is on the other end of the house)
- Are there any other limitations that I should know of?
Other than these questions, I think that I'm leaning towards Videotron. Their network is very modern and coax is great, but I'd like to know if I'm missing anything.
With Videotron, it's $48 per month for 300GB at 20mbit/10mbit. Bell would be 25mbit/10mbit for $50 (dry loop included). The modem and activation fees difference is of only $15, so it all comes down to which one is better tech-wise.
Thanks for your time! :-)
