Upgrade your own firmware - DCM475

So I upgraded my DCM475 from 2.08 to 2.16 using Teddy Boom's documented method using a USB to TTL unit. Please see below for my detailed procedure. This should only be attempted by the somewhat technically inclined, and is a procedure for Windows. It can of course be done in any OS with the right software tools. Hardware: USB to TTL cable. Mine is a CP2102 module, but there are a number of cables that work. Software: Serial console (I used Putty), and a TFTP server (I used tftpd32). 1. Connect ethernet from PC directly to modem. 2. Run tftp server (I used TFTPD32). 3. Run Putty as serial console. Set speed to 115200 (leave the rest as default). 4. Connect the ground, tx and rx points of the TTL cable to the DCM475 header. 5. Turn on the modem and count to 4. On 4, short Pin #8 (I used the ground pin, although you can use anything grounded). The timing is VERY strict. As you turn the modem on, and you short the pins, take a look at the Putty console. If there is a bunch of text, then you were too late. If there's a frozen Broadcom ascii graphic, you were too early. If it passes by the Broadcom graphic and gets you to a prompt, then you're good. There's a green light on the modem that flashes during this bootup sequence (at the 4 second mark), and you have to short EXACTLY as that light flashes. It helps to put the modem PSU on a switch, because this will probably take about 20 tries the first time you attempt it. 6. The modem will setup your nic to it's first DHCP slot 192.168.100.10 (if not, then I would change it to that manually) and you can now take a look at your tftp server which should now see the new IP. If not, then restart the tftp server. Make sure that the firmware file is in the tftp root folder. 7. Ensure that your firewall is turned off or configured to allow traffic through the TFTP server port. I didn't do this the first time, and I turned a 15 minute job into well over an hour. 8. Issue the following commands in the console: "cd d" (this changes the directory) "dload -i2 192.168.100.10 02.16.bin" (this downloads the firmware from the tftp server) 9. This should take a few seconds to flash, and you're all done. Check the diagnostics page in your web browser at modem address 192.168.100.1 and it should now say version 02.16.
